Pullman: Intent on story-telling

Apart from a claim of  plagiarism (see forthcoming post), Philip Pullman – author of the anti-Church His Dark Materials trilogy –  can now add his name to the list of authors looting history.

He has announced a new title, The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ to be released next year. The publisher Cannongate describe the book as an “ingenious, spellbinding and fiercely subversive retelling of the life of Jesus”.

He joins fellow atheist authors in the attempt to oust God from the mind of readers…with questionable results. Thank goodness atheists are able to dig their own grave – I am sure this one will be sorely anticipated.

A quote from his speech, reported by the BBC:

Even if unity remains our strength, our diversity remains our wealth

As much as this may be seen as political talk, match it with the slogan printed on a proposed new global currency.

Russian President Medvedev

 The picture (left) shows a sample coin unveiled by Russian President Dimitri Medvedev at a summit of G20 leaders. It reads;  ’‘United Future World Currency … Unity in Diversity’

The idea was not adopted by other leaders, but President Medvedev of Russia claimed it shows how serious some are in considering a new global currency.

Both these events indicate moves to bring in a new philosophy of politics.

The new fundamental principle of global politics is not truth, but a collection of opinions. What matters is not who is right, but whether we are all at peace…so say two global leaders.

A heart-warming assertion, but the medicine of democracey demands a second opinion. Perhaps Mr Rompuy should take note.
